Class Introduction- Jaylene Cordero

Posted by Jaylene Cordero on

Hey everyone, my name is Jaylene Cordero (She/her) and I am currently an undeclared major but plan in majoring in Biology.

After reviewing the syllabus, one thing I am excited about is in improving my writing, and learning about different types of writing styles. I personally enjoy English class so I’m excited about the whole class in general. One thing that I am nervous about is that the course will be online, I believe it would’ve been way better and easier to manage and understand in person. To answer the question of what are the qualities of good writing I believe that all writing is different and good writing should engage the readers and keep them interested in what they are reading by using different choices of words and writing styles. In order for one to be considered a good writer they must be able to attract readers and gain their attention in order for them to keep reading. I feel like it is important to write well because it is a form of communication that we use on a daily basis and without writing well others won’t be able to understand what it is that one is trying to say.  The easiest part of writing for me would be reading over my work and editing it. I find that to be easy because by rereading over my work and editing I can spot any mistakes made. In the other hand, what I find most difficult is actually starting a writing piece, I seem to procrastinate a lot when starting a new piece of writing and even restarting multiple times but once I am happy with the beginning of my writing I find it easy to continue writing and finish off. In this course I hope to learn how to write a good introduction to my writing since it’s what I struggle with the most. I’m not really sure of what I will be having to write about in my major/career but since I want to be a pediatrician I’m guessing medical reports and scientific findings. I think being an effective writer will affect my career opportunities because with good writing I’ll be able to write good medical reports and anything else that I may need to write for.

Good qualities of writing comes differently with everyone. Everyone has their own style of writing but no matter what style of writing the main goal is to explain information the reader in a way that is understandable and clear but a bit complex but one has to have a clear purpose inter writing what are they trying to convey, inform or prove to the reader.

The easiest part of writing would be gathering information while the hardest part of writing for me would be the putting the information together and analyzing text and being able to find and use the right writing techniques.I am undeclared but I do plan on becoming an orthodontist and I feel writing will allow me to become closer to my patients. This pandemic has changed how communicate with people and the use of technology is only going to grow from now on blogs can become helpful in the orthodontist field updating clients answering questions and even informing them.Writing will also give me an advantage to market myself efficiently.

Class Introduction – Matthew Rodriguez

Posted by Matthew Rodriguez on

Hello my name is Matthew Rodriguez (he/his) , and my intended major is Psychology.

After reading over the syllabus, I am mostly excited to learn how to write clearly in using different types of academic formats that I was not taught in high high school. What I am very nervous about after reading the syllabus is having to use technology to write and revise my work because most of my written work throughout my life was not online. The qualities of a good writer is patience, having the ability to write intellectually, and being able to use evidence to help your writing make sense to the person reading it. It is important to be able to write well because it can help you to think about more ideas when it comes to your everyday life. For example, if I can think quickly when I write and be able to focus while doing that, then that could help me to focus more and think more quickly and decisively in everyday task in my life. The easiest part about writing for me is being able to think freely when it comes to the ideas that flow through my head. If you gave me an assignment to write about something I can relate to, then I could easily write a lot about it because of how free my mind is while writing. A skill that I do well in writing is write passionately about what I am saying so the person reading can actually feel what I am saying and understand me without even being there. The hardest part about writing for me is writing many pages because I did not get that experience in high school. What I could do to work on it is to have more patience when I am writing essays that require five or more pages. I am not very sure about what genres I will be expected to write for my major in psychology. But if I were to guess, I feel like I would have to write about what is wrong with my patients and how do their experiences align with their behavior and the way that they act towards certain situations. I might also have to write and talk about how I can help them and different ways to fix their problems. I am a people person and I can read and understand people very well and why they do the things they do. I definitely feel confident that my ability to understand people can help me to do very well in this field.

Class Introduction – Leanna Waldropt

Posted by Leanna Waldropt on

Hello, my name is Leanna Waldropt (she/her) and I am intended to major in general education.

After reviewing the syllabus I am interested in learning the new technological ways to post my work so my peers can read and I can read my peers as well. I am excited to learn new ways to make my essays and writing skills better. On the downside, I am nervous in writing long page essays because I am not that experienced in doing that. I am happy that all the assignments for the semester is posted and I can work hard to do my essays.

A quality of good writing is to have good gramatical correctness. This is important because you want to make sure all of your sentences and thoughts are gathered together. It is also good to have structure to make all your thoughts organized so the reader can understand it. In order to become a good writer you must review all of your drafts and check for grammatical errors. It is important to make sure your point is made in essays. It is also good to cite evidence and give credit to your cite. It is important to write well because writing is important skill to have on a daily basis. Writing gives us the ability to express ourselves to other people.

The easiest part of writing for me is being able to express myself on a topic that I am really interested in. Also, to find evidence to support my opinion. I mostly do well in writing my outlines to gather all of my thoughts. The hardest part of writing for me is writing many pages of essays. In my experience I have only done that once and it was difficult for me. The part I have to work on is writing multiple pages of essays. Since all the work is posted I believe that if i take my time with each assignment i can work harder to improve that hard skill.

I am currently unsure what I am expected to write for my profession for being a teacher. I believe I might have to write many essays for classes. Being an effective writer will affect my career opportunities by enhancing my communication skills and being able to express myself clearer.

Class Introduction – Miguel Estrella

Posted by Miguel Estrella on

Hello my name is Miguel Estrella. I go by he/him. Currently, my intended major is Accounting.

After reading the syllabus, I feel very excited to experience what this class has to offer and to improve my skills in writing. I am looking forward to learning how to critically analyze a text and learn how to execute arguments in a strong and understandable way. My only worry about this class is that it takes place online. This makes me nervous because I feel that I would learn more and better if the class were in person.

In order to be a good writer, a person must write things in a way that others can easily understand and that captivates the reader. It is important to be able to write well because something well written is likely to attract a large audience. The easiest part of writing for me is coming up with things to write. I feel that I am very well at explaining things that are on my mind, even when my thoughts are jumbled up. The hardest part of writing for me is knowing how to write an introduction. This is something I have always struggled on and that I can use help with. For my intended major, I am not sure what I would be required to write. Being an effective writer will affect my career opportunities because my intended career will probably require me to be persuasive and know how to explain things in a comprehensible way.

Class Introduction

Posted by Joshawa Allotey on

Hi, my name is Joshawa Allotey but you can also call me Josh for short.Am OK with he/him and i haven’t decided yet on what i intend to major in.To be totally honest am kind of apprehensive since am a freshman student.Well after going through the syllabus am kind of excited  and nervous in a way because i have the chance to learn something different and new from high school. A writer that has the ability to be very constructive in forming sentences, able to express him or herself very well, very imaginative is nothing more than some of the qualities of a good writer. In order for one to become a good writer he or she should be able to express and bring out everything in his or her thoughts, not just all but also imaginations,he or she should be very imaginative as well. When one is able to write well he or she is able to express himself and able to speak very good English,it also serves as a good job opportunity since he or she could turn into a writer and make lots of money from it.Not only does it serve as a source of money for the person but it also builds up the person as a human, since it helps in building up the confidence of the individual to be able to speak with confidence anywhere they find themselves.

Personally for me, the easiest part for me in terms of writing is the ability to be imaginative and use lots of vocabulary, since as a teenager or youth we are full of imaginations and vocabulary.Due to our young age and activeness we tend to watch movies, series and lots of TV shows a lot thus picking up a whole lot of new words and imaginations from everyday life. For me the hardest part of writing is the construction of the sentences. The idea and imagination could be there but the choosing of words and the linking of such imaginations tend to be the hardest part of writing for me. That is what i think i have to really work on,how to let me just (pour out my mind and imaginations).Although i haven’t decided yet,i plan on taking computer science where computing will be very useful.I had always had a thing for computing relating stuff since childhood.Being an effective writer can affect my career opportunity since its a very highly funded business and its also a way of leaving ones legacy since he or she will be remembered for writing that particular book or books for a long time.

Class Introduction – Gabriela Harrington

Posted by Gabriela Harrington on

Hello! My name is Gabriela, my pronouns are she/her and my intended major is Nursing with a specialization in Midwifery.

After reading the syllabus for this class, I’m excited to expand my mind and to learn new techniques to better my writing. On the other hand, I am nervous about keeping up with due dates and keeping organized.

Good writing is subjective, it’s based on the reader’s perspective and their appreciation for certain genres. However, good writing is written with passion and enthusiasm. When a writer is passionate and knowledgeable about their subject, it translates into the written piece. In order to be a good writer, it is important to become familiar with the topic being discussed. Regardless of what genre it is, good writing appeals to the senses; it paints a vivid picture in your mind, like a movie reel.

Good writing skills are imperative to thrive in today’s world because it is a language understood worldwide. Good writing allows us to walk others through our thoughts and ideas as well as serving as a form of self-expression for ourselves. Writing well serves to move others in ways unimaginable, as it could serve as self-reflection, motivation, or a brief escape from reality. Writing well proves not just that we can articulate well, but that we as a civilization and/or society have evolved to use language as a universal form of communication. We went from artifacts and wall paintings to composing pieces as long as needed to convey emotions.

The easiest part of writing for me is articulating my thoughts into sentences and organizing them to properly get my point across. I enjoy expressing myself through written language because I can go back and fix things. On the other hand, the most difficult part about writing for me is getting started. I have a hard time knowing where to start.

As a nursing major, I expect to be writing research papers about medical topics as well as patient care. My future career will require me to utilize good writing skills when applying to work in my field and to communicate with my peers and superiors. Being an excellent writer will help me stand out against other applicants when I am furthering my career and will ensure that my intelligence is properly represented to those who do not know me personally.

Class Introductions

Posted by Kiana Joyner on

Hi, my name is Kiana Joyner, my intended major is Art, I want to become an Art teacher, my preferred pronouns are her/she. After reviewing the syllabus, one thing I’m unsure/nervous about is making sure I complete assignments the way they’re intended and asking for help when needed. I haven’t written a formal essay in a while and I fear that my writing may not be up to par, so to speak. I hope that throughout the course these fears settle as I learn to appreciate writing again and that I can become a better writer. I’m anxious to understand how to become a better writer and to be able to use what I learn in this course in my other courses.  I believe the qualities of good writing are being able to write coherently so that it’s clear and precise and easy to understand. It is also being able to understand grammatical errors, and being able to use good writing techniques. I think being a good writer takes time and dedication. You have to want to be a good writer, not just complete writing assignments because you have to. To be a good writer you have to be able to take criticism as well and be able to take it and fix your mistakes. So that means doing multiple drafts to try and get your work as clear and neat as possible, to put your best work forward.

It’s important to be able to write well because knowing how to write well is a skill that is useful for a lifetime. When you start a career or ar even applying to one, your writing tells a story about you, and the better you write the better chance you have of being hired. Also regardless of your career field, there is a big chance that you’re going to be asked to write something, whether it be formal or informal. I think the easiest part of writing for me is being able to grasp information and then to have to explain what I’ve learned. Writing in itself can be complex, but I feel I’m able to deliver information clearly. The hardest part of writing for me is being able to compile all the information and deliver it clearly. I sometimes find myself straying from the topic onto another topic. I find sometimes I grasp too much information so when its time to write an essay on it, it’s all over the place and hard to follow. I’m not sure what I will be expected to write as an art major, maybe art reports. I know for art teaching I will need to write papers and mock lesson plans. I’ll have to be able to prove that I can write lesson plans that are clear and easy to follow.

Class Introduction – John Albino

Posted by John Albino on

Hey I’m John Albino, I’m 19 and graduated from Dr Richard Izquierdo Health and Science Charter school.

Im looking forward for this year and I believe that I will do my best this semester, give it my all.  I am a little nervous but its not because of the class it self, I more nervous on the experience and environment I’m in now.  I’m hoping that this semester would fly by and that the I get along with everyone else.

Some things I find easy about writing is expressing yourself and getting your mind out there for everyone to see what’s goin on in your head.  What can be challenging is actually getting it out there especially in times like this everyone questions everything and you have to make sure your have to clarify everything.  Writing is something that I like to do on my free time and I find it pretty calming.  I like getting my ideas out because I find that I always have something on my mind and I it bothers me when I can’t get it out.  Usually when I’m in a roll I keep going and I don’t stop until everything is out or I complete the task to be best of my ability.  One thing about writing for me is that I take my time sometimes I don’t like to do everything in one session so I do it bit by bit and that can sometime screw me over in the long run, but I only do that to try to make it the best I could.  I get tired when writing and can’t go on but a way I can change that is by making sure I put effort in everything I do.

Class Introduction

Class Introduction

Hello my name is Amani Daniel. My gender pronouns are his/him. My  intended major is Civil Engineering.

After reading the syllabus, I am most excited for is the feed back from my peers and teacher to help me improve on my writing and hearing my classmates ideas so that I can expand on my own mindset.  I am most nervous about the essays that we will be writing for the class . I am sure that I can get used to the writing in the and improve my grammar skills that are average. The qualities of a good writing is structure so that the reader can easily follow along with what they are reading. The structure can be an important part of grabbing the reader’s attention. To get to this goal you have to continue to write and change around lines and words to better develop a way to see the topic from different protectives. It is important to write well to get your idea conveyed correctly without and misunderstandings.

The easiest writing for me is coming up with ideas on what to write for a topic given to me because of my expanding ideas of how I interpret the topic given to me. One of the struggles that have with writing is that following a rubric is hard for me because there are a lot of things that I have to make sure are included in to my paragraphs and it mess with my flow of writing which have me questioning a lot of the things that I end up writing. I’m not sure what genres will be expected of me in my major, but will take this opportunity to become a better writer overall. Let it be a email or a future essay, so that I can communicate with my peers on a more professional level
