The first scholarly article I will be using is “Child abuse and neglect in a rapidly developing country: Parents’ perspectives”. This article talks about how children of young age are being neglected and abused in the developing countries. Children at very young age might be abused by so many people, be it strangers, adult friends or even close relatives. The abuse can be physical or even sexual. These abuse are brought about because of so many reasons for example low socioeconomic status, single parent, domestic violence, parental inadequate coping skills, parental stress and low education level, and child’s medical condition. All these reasons are major factors whereby kids end end up being abused and neglected. Laws should be enforced highly on those who abuse children. When children get abused at such young age it tends to hurt and even hunt them for a long time as the child may end up becoming emotionally insecure and many others.

The second scholarly article I will like to write about is “Racism: An Elite asset” This article speaks of how blacks used to be forced into slavery during the past and so many inhuman stuff. Racism did not begin today as it had began lots of centuries ago and it still is going on. Racism along with homophobia, sexism, and so many others must remain a threat; otherwise, the world might be lost. The article also speaks of how Former President, Barack Obama during his time fought so much and hard just to stop racism in the country. Recently and unarmed black man George Floyd was chocked to death by a police officer for no reason. This shows the extent of racism now as police: the ones who have vowed to protect us are the ones now killing the citizens due to racism.

Lastly the final scholarly article I will touch on is “Creating Antiracist spaces where black students can breathe and thrive”. This article talks about how two deadly virus currently namely COVID and racism are killing black students and people today. Black people are killed for no reason just because people feel threatened by their color when they are around which is bad. Black people nowadays instead of thinking how they will will go about their day the next day now live in fear of their lives instead just because they are scared they might be killed the next day which is not supposed to be the case. We are supposed to live together and not divided just because of color.

The text that I will write is about a movie titled “Like stars on earth”. Thesis statement: Children who tend to have problems or challenges in their lives need to be understood and receive the full support from people especially their parents.

The reason why I chose this movie is because this one of the emotional and morale teaching movie ever. It is about a little boy named Ishaan who had a disease called dyslexia, which made it difficult for him to read or interpret words, letters and other symbols thus always failed his text and quizzes. He was very playful and that always got him into trouble in school with his teachers. Colors and art was one thing that Ishaan loved and was very good at. His brother Yohan on the other hand was a brilliant kid who passed all his tests and quizzes. This angered their dad even more because he could not understand why Ishaan kept failing his exams while his brother always passed his. Ishaan’s mum and dad did all they could do in terms of speaking to the headmaster to try and have extra classes for Ishaan to try and improve his grades. Unfortunately Ishaan’s dad lost patience with him and decided to send him to a boarding house. His dad got so furious with him and termed him as “a useless kid”. This left Ishaan totally devastated and barely spoke a word in his new boarding school. He was always in tears as he felt abandoned by his parents.

Ishaan had a new teacher in a few weeks time named Prof Ram. He was an Arts teacher filled with so much charisma. He was someone who always helped kids with disabilities and just loved to help kids. He soon noticed Ishaan’s sadness in class and decided to find out more about Ishaan. He soon found out Ishaan was a very great artist and painter which even excited him even more because he saw his self exactly in Ishaan. He too had the same disease and was also a great painter. He decided to personally help and teach Ishaan to read and write and help him discover his hidden potential which was painting. A painting competition was later organized in which Ishaan won and was finally recognized by everyone. Fortunately Ishaan passed his final exams and his parents was then invited to the school. His dad was left in so much shame with himself and tears after he found out his son Ishaan’s artwork ended up as the back cover of the school’s magazine and also passed his exams.

I want parents to always show full support in their kids in their difficult times because kids who don’t get enough attention, love and support end up become devastated and timid all the time which is not good for a child at such a young age. The last thing a child needs is to feel left out and unloved by his parents and people. Some people and kids have so many problems and difficulties, such people should be understood and helped not shun instead.

On reading the “The Good Immigrant Student” , Nguyen said in the 28th paragraph that “I would like to make a broad, accurate statement about immigrant children in schools. I would like to speak for them (us). I hesitate; I cannot.” I believe what she is trying to say is that it is not fair to judge or assume everyone will be like a particular person. For instance she said “I doubled back to school and overheard Mrs. Alexander in the classroom talking to another teacher. “Can you believe it?” Mrs. Alexander was saying. “A foreigner winning our spelling bee!”. An award she clearly deserved was denied hers because he teacher did not like immigrants. Another proof that shows Mrs. Alexander did not really like Nguyen was “If it was my turn to read aloud during reading circle, she’d interrupt me to snap, “You’re reading too fast” or demand, “What does that word mean?” Things she did not do to the other students. This is also a proof of how Mrs. Alexander kept picking on Nguyen on purpose due to her Vietnamese accent and background because she could have at least been more polite to Nguyen instead on constantly interrupting her during readings which she does not do to other students. Mrs. King on the other hand was a teacher who loved and adored everyone no matter the race, language one spoke or the background a student might be coming from . This is a reason why Nguyen did not want to make her statement broad since not all teachers are like Mrs. Alexander but instead made this statement specifically to people who discriminate against immigrants to show more respect to them. People who discriminate against other people should seize from it since we are all humans and one and as such must behave like that.

Upon reading both Abraham Lincoln’s “Gettysburg Address” and John F. Kennedy’s “inaugural Address” you cannot help it but to see the similarities and differences in both of them. In Abraham Lincoln’s address he spoke about their engagement and preparation in a civil war ” Now we are engaged in a great civil war , testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and dedicated, can long endure”. He also spoke about how those who lost their lives to fight for the nation will always be remembered and may rest in peace ” We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that the nation might live”. This was for all the struggles they all went through in order to win that battle which many brave men lost their lives in the process due to their dedication and love for the nation. Whereby John Kennedy spoke about poverty “For human holds in his mortal hands the power to abolish all forms of human poverty and all forms of human life. Even though their speech is different it stills shows the different incidence that took place in their time of live. For Lincoln he gave this address after the civil war that took place in Gettysburg while Kennedy spoke during his inauguration which was during the times of their hard living. Although they gave their all to fight in the solving of the nations problems I still believe that it has not been completely solved since there is still a high rate in poverty where people even sleep on the streets, train stations and a whole lot of unkept places, there is still a war going on in the nation although it might not be between nations but its between blacks and whites since there is still a whole lot of racial abuse in the nation. All these problems need to be solved in order to continue the legacies or Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy for the whole nation to be at peace.

Despite being incarcerated,Malcolm X was still able to educate himself more about the English Language.I was stunned when he mentioned that he had re-written the entire dictionary and read it loudly to himself afterwards considering the number of pages and words in a dictionary.Fortunately for him he was able to know a wide range of words, people, place and history from the dictionary.I believe it was his envy for Bimbi’s style of speaking and expressing himself gave Malcolm the idea of studying a whole dictionary. As stated” When Bimbi first made me feel envy of his stock of knowledge. Bimbi had always taken charge of any conversation he was in,and i had tried to emulate him”.Malcolm had envy for Bimbi not because of jealousy but rather he had taken Bimbi as his role model.I consider this to be determination and passion due to the fact that he was incarcerated he still made it no excuse not to educate himself and instead he had made up his mind to achieve his goals and feel free.He mentioned he felt so free and proud of himself on what he had been able to achieve in prison.”I do not think anybody ever got more out of going to prison than i did.In fact, prison enabled me to study far more intensively than i would have in my life had gone differently and i had attended some college.Due to his belief of how free he felt in prison he also believed colleges where full of distractions. He stated “I imagine that one of the biggest troubles with colleges is there are too many distractions, too much panty-raiding,fraternities, and boola-boola and all of that”.

Malcolm took a very huge step in his life, considering the fact that it could have been a different story but rather he changed for the best in terms of his literature skills.Malcolm was able to turn from a man who could barely understand a word to a well educated man who can read and write.I am really positive that everyone has at least one thing he or she is not that good at,but with time and determination one can become if not perfect then very good at it.Malcolm made the exploring of new words something he mostly used most of his time with,in other words his hobby.I feel as though everyone can make time for reading and explore new words considering that one can never know all words but one can always learn new words and expand their vocabularies.Malcolm was able to achieve his goal in reading i believe him to be a mentor to all of us who intend to be very good in English language.

Language played a very huge role in Amy Tan’s life.English language was never her strongest skills both in school and her professional life. She said “while my English skills where never judged as poor, compared to my math,English could never be considered as my strongest suit”.This clearly shows that Tan did not easily become a professional writer because she had a whole lot of challenges in English language at school.Amy also grew up with her mum who spoke “broken” English and mostly had to speak in the position of her mum.Amy kind of felt ashamed since no one could understand what her mum tried to say and people mostly took her for granted or did no pay attention to her,for example “I was ashamed of English”.Since the type of language spoken especially at home tends to influence the kind of English one is able to speak,Amy believed her English exams where affected because of the kind of English her mum spoke with her at home with.Tan stated”But i do think that the language spoken in the family plays a large role in shaping the language of the child. And i believe that it affected my results on the achievements test,I.Q test, and the SAT”.English was always her biggest problem in school since she was able to get A’s in Math and Science except English language.

I think that people who learn English language as a second language or grow up in families that tend to speak multiple languages are clearly aware of the language that is used around them. When you hear a native speaker speak the language you are also learning, since its the person’s real tongue it sounds differently and makes you aware of how you and others speak the language. For instance I tend to speak “broken” language with my friends and close ones and speak a different language with my family.I only speak English in school or with a new person I just get to meet.I like to listen to others speak the language and pronounce words or their choice of words because am a good listener.I feel like am also in Tan’s exact shoes because I also believe the less amount of English being spoken at home affects my English grades always.

Class Introduction

Posted by Joshawa Allotey on

Hi, my name is Joshawa Allotey but you can also call me Josh for short.Am OK with he/him and i haven’t decided yet on what i intend to major in.To be totally honest am kind of apprehensive since am a freshman student.Well after going through the syllabus am kind of excited  and nervous in a way because i have the chance to learn something different and new from high school. A writer that has the ability to be very constructive in forming sentences, able to express him or herself very well, very imaginative is nothing more than some of the qualities of a good writer. In order for one to become a good writer he or she should be able to express and bring out everything in his or her thoughts, not just all but also imaginations,he or she should be very imaginative as well. When one is able to write well he or she is able to express himself and able to speak very good English,it also serves as a good job opportunity since he or she could turn into a writer and make lots of money from it.Not only does it serve as a source of money for the person but it also builds up the person as a human, since it helps in building up the confidence of the individual to be able to speak with confidence anywhere they find themselves.

Personally for me, the easiest part for me in terms of writing is the ability to be imaginative and use lots of vocabulary, since as a teenager or youth we are full of imaginations and vocabulary.Due to our young age and activeness we tend to watch movies, series and lots of TV shows a lot thus picking up a whole lot of new words and imaginations from everyday life. For me the hardest part of writing is the construction of the sentences. The idea and imagination could be there but the choosing of words and the linking of such imaginations tend to be the hardest part of writing for me. That is what i think i have to really work on,how to let me just (pour out my mind and imaginations).Although i haven’t decided yet,i plan on taking computer science where computing will be very useful.I had always had a thing for computing relating stuff since childhood.Being an effective writer can affect my career opportunity since its a very highly funded business and its also a way of leaving ones legacy since he or she will be remembered for writing that particular book or books for a long time.
