Class Introduction – Ranniel Peña

Posted by Ranniel Peña Maria on
Hello Everyone , My name is Ranniel Peña (Him, He), My Intended major at Lehman is undecided at the moment

After reviewing the syllabus, one thing I am excited is to improve my writing and reading level at a professional level and have the same understanding as in my native language, one thing I am nervous about this course is not being at the level of my other classmates and not perform well. The qualities of good writing is having a good understanding of the language and words, also have a good spelling so others can understand it. In order to be a good writer, you must have a good command of the language to avoid spelling mistakes, in addition having the imagination to create a work. It is important to be able to write well because the basis of writing is the spelling of the language, if a writer has bad spelling no one will be able to understand what he is talking about, then his writing will not be able to communicate the message he is trying to send.

The easiest part of writing for me is to think about what I am going to write and how I am going to do it so that it is well understood, the hardest part of writing for me is maintaining control in writing, I mean not losing context and staying on topic without deviating. I need to work on my grammar and understanding of the language to be able to use a large vocabulary while writing. I am thinking of going to a computer science field as computer science so I need a high understanding of the language because it requires being able to program correctly.

Class Introduction

Posted by Joelle McKenzie on

And in true Jamaican fashion (cause wi extra bad!). Wah gwaan everybody?! My name is Joelle McKenzie, I am a 3rd year student with a major in Exercise Science and a minor in Pre-Physical Therapy. I look forward to working with everyone so as to achieve at our highest and greatest potentials.

In going through the syllabus, as expected, because this is an English Composition course, I duly noted the amount of reading required. As a child, I was an avid reader, I enjoyed reading a book from cover to cover along with learning new things, and I brought that sense of curiosity with me into adulthood, so I am excited to see what literary adventure this class will bring me.

With regards to what I may be anxious about, as much as I loved reading, formulating compositions was not exactly my strongest suit. I do hope this course will help me to develop that skill set.

I believe qualities of good writing has to do with the development of sensible structure, coherent ideas, intrigue, expressionism, as well as a sense of correctness. To be a good writer, one has to attest to the attributes of the qualities of good writing and let it shine in one’s works. It is important to be able to write well so as to ensure the readers can comprehend fully what the writer is trying to convey to his/her audience.

The easiest part of writing for me is introducing a subject matter. The hardest part is in developing and conceptualizing the idea (s) due to a fear of repetition. What I need to work on most is composition development and progression with a purpose.

The genres that will be expected most of me in my career field are descriptive, objective, and subjective writing when making notes. Given that my future profession is in the arena of Physical Therapy, being an effective writer will require me to focus mainly on  the patient’s progress and therapeutic development, so it is expected that I will have to prepare and provide documented information with clarity and concise precision.

Class Introduction

Posted by Salimatou Bah on

Hello, my name is Salimatou Bah but people usually call me Salima. My intended major is biology. My preferred gender pronouns are she/hers. I am excited to learn how people form their opinions and persuade people to agree with them. That is something that I feel would personally help my life. I’m nervous that I’m coming into this course not so good of a writer but that makes me even more excited to learn how to improve it all.

A quality of good writing is clarity. Your audience should question what you’re going to say next and you should say it. You should have them wondering then answer their question. It is important to write well because it corresponds with your verbal communication. If you can clearly convey a message through typing your verbal conversation would probably clearly convey messages as well. You want your audience to understand what you’re trying to point out. You want to state your point, give your evidence, and give reasoning to your audience as to why your point is valid.

I think the easiest part of writing for me is writing conclusions. Your conclusion should be a summary of your writing piece and your most important points. I feel like I am good at highlighting the important points in my conclusion further proving the point I’m trying to prove to my audience. The hardest part of writing for me is citing my evidence. Once I have a good grasp on a topic I am able to give opinions and facts in an effective way so my reader can try to relate to my views. I have to work on citing because when I do research and don’t cite my sources it may be seen like plagiarism when in reality it is not. We have to give everyone their credit for their articles and thoughts that helped to build our opinions on any topic.

Being a good writer corresponds with being a good reader who can take texts and interpret them depending on what they are trying to do with them. I expect to write research papers in my intended major. I feel like this will affect my career opportunities because this encourages me to understand readings from different perspectives. I feel like this could open up the opportunity to find why things happen in our world and what we can do about it.

Class Introduction- Jennifer Alcantara

Posted by Jennifer Alcantara on

Hi, my name is Jennifer Alcantara. My intended major is Psychology, and the gender pronouns I prefer to be called are her/she.

One thing that I’m excited about is the readings that are due for November 3rd and 5th. I’m excited about these readings because I can tell that these are going to be controversial passages based on the titles of “Which is it, Hispanic or Latino?” by Cindy Rodriguez and ” Why I’m Black, Not African American” by John H. McWhorter. I feel like we are all going to take something from these passages. I’m nervous about the essays that are 60% of the grade, just because essays are not my strong suit.

Some of the qualities of a good writer and what one would have to have to be a good writer would be organization and writing what you’re trying to portray clearly. That’s important for me because, without organization and an exact focal point on what you’re trying to discuss, the reader would be lost.

The easiest part of writing for me in an essay would be the conclusion. It’s easy for me to basically summarize my whole essay and put it in one paragraph and also leave the reader with something to take away. The easiest for me would also be writing about a topic that I’m passionate about.

The hardest part of writing for me is usually just trying to get my thoughts down clearly. I would consider this the most challenging part for me because I tend to get distracted and often ramble when I don’t have many ideas on what to write or even the opposite-when I have too many ideas and can’t put them down on paper in a clear way.

The writing genres I would have to write for my intended major would be research papers/reports. Being an effective writer can affect career opportunities because you would need to write in a clear, professional manner; if you don’t have that, it would be very hard for your readers/others to understand your work, which can impact your career negatively.

Class Introduction – Dalbert Andujar

Posted by Dalbert Andujar on

Hello Everyone , My name is Dalbert Andujar ( Him, He ) My intended major at Lehman college right now is currently undecided although I am leaning towards Business Administration

After reviewing the syllabus, one thing I am exited about is Improving my writing and text understanding at a collegiate level and expanding vocabulary in my writing. Also I am looking forward to challenging myself on writing pieces and exercises in this class. Lastly i noticed on the syllabus that we would be raising social awareness and that’s what i’m most exited about because it is a topic and form of writing that i am passionate about because of the world we live in today. Something that I am nervous about is sometimes sharing my writing with other classmates just because it may not be the best but i’m looking forward to working on that.

Qualities of a good writer are being able to get to the point in a timely manner in a writing and not drag the piece of writing longer than it has to be. In order to become a good writer you have to be willing to learn and take constructive criticism from your peers and professor. It is important to write well because it can be a way of communication either to inform someone about something or to express yourself , writing has many functions in today’s world. The easiest part of writing for me is finding supportive evidence in a text to support my claim in the writing, its the easiest for me because I’m good at making connections between the text and the prompt. The most difficult part for me when writing is being consistent with body paragraphs after the first couple, the level of writing tends to fall off a little from past criticism. That’s what I feel I have to work on along with expanding my versatility in writing. Writing pieces I would have to write in my intended major ( Business Administration ) would be  Memorandums, reports, proposals, emails, and a variety of other business related written materials are all forms of business writing. Being a effective writer in my field of study can be helpful because it can make reports and memorandums more clear and understanding.

Class Introduction- Donika Dedushaj

Donika Dedushaj

Intended Major: Nursing

Preferred Gender Pronoun: She/Her

As a college freshman, I am sure that there are many different sensations and thoughts that run through our minds, while we are all new to this experience.  Personally, I am both excited and nervous as to what this class will have awaiting for me. On the positive, I am excited to engage with a variety forms of texts and become familiar with major arguments and writing formats. After reviewing the syllabus, I felt anxious. I began to hope that I will not become overwhelmed with the writing assignments, even though writing multi-paged papers is something new to me.

Writing is something that can be improved throughout the course of one’s life. It is important to write well because it is a form of communication. Writing is a way one is on their intellect and even personality. One main quality of good writing is structure. The way a writer organizes their writing is important because all sections should be linked together smoothly. Moreover, word selection says a lot about a writer. This is an important part of writing because it helps illustrate a vivid picture to the reader. The choice of words helps the writer express their ideas that will have an impact on the audience. Becoming a good writer may take time and practice. Tips for being a good writer include: reading, editing, gathering ideas, and writing often.

From my own point of view, the easiest part of writing is brainstorming. Once a topic is bought to my attention, I immediately brainstorm and outline my ideas. However, when it is time to start the writing, I have trouble with the introduction. I find this the hardest part because it outlines the main points of your writing, while it is also supposed to grab the readers’ attention. Another thing I need to work on with my writing is not being repetitive. While editing my work, I tend to catch myself repeating major words and ideas. As was introduced, my intended major is nursing which I know will involve different forms of writing. Since this field of study is based on science, the work that I will be expected to write is scientific writing; such as, research papers and lab reports. Being an effective writer affects your career opportunities because the better one’s writings becomes, the better their speech becomes too. Writing is necessary in all career opportunities because specific writing skills will impress the onlookers.

One thing I am unsure and worried about would be the amount of work. I am concerned that I will not pick up on certain topics and sometimes not understand what I may be reading in this course. According to the syllabus, some methods of good writing could be rhetorical knowledge, the ability to critically think, write, and read, organization, time management and detail. For one to be considered to be a good writer they must have precision, process, good punctuation, grammar, spelling, and needs to know how to analyze, edit, and organize their work. It is important to write well for the future. Writing is a word, a world, and a density. Knowing to write well is to be considered a privilege and a advantage for many people and for many different fields.

The easiest part of writing for me is my explanation and a bit of my analyzing. I feel as though I am a good critic and I can analyze and explain evidence well, which is depending my understanding on the topic. The hardest part of writing for me would be the spelling and grammar part. Sometimes it is a bit hard for me to remember how to spell words and write proper sentences.Which is also the same things I need to work on plus organization. As of right now, I do not know what writing would be intended for my undecided major. However, I have been looking into journalism and music. And I believe creative writing ,poetry, and play writes are in my favor. Which I very much enjoy. Being an effective writer can affect my career opportunities but pushing me forward and giving me confidence in my writing, so I can make good writing pieces.

Class Introduction-Karen Herrera

Posted by Karen Herrera on

Hi, my name is Karen Herrera (she/her) and my major as of now is undecided although I have thoughts of majoring in early childhood education.

After reviewing the syllabus, one thing I am excited about is learning how certain situations impact our experiences. I look forward to reading new texts and books in order to gain more insights on social and political issues. One thing I am nervous about in this course is the critical analysis research paper we will be writing later on in the semester because I haven’t had a lot of experience writing research papers. Some qualities of good writing are being able to express your ideas clearly, being organized in your writing, your word choice, and your voice while writing. In order to be a good writer you have to be able to catch your audiences attention quickly in order to persuade them to keep reading, listening, etc. You have to have a set pace and sociable transition set in your writing, you don’t want to mention the same things repeatedly, that will bore the reader but you also don’t want to jump into all your ideas at once, that will throw off the reader and lead to confusion. It is important to write well because not only is writing used on a day to day basis, but writing well is a principle factor in communication and emphasizes how you are able to portray your ideas. The easiest part of writing for me would be reasoning, I tend to gather a lot of thoughts specifically in a persuasive essay regardless of what side I’m on. Also, I find the editing and revising part of writing both easy but overwhelming. When you think of it, all the writing is there, it’s just a matter of rearranging ideas or sentences, grammer, or adding more writing but sometimes I want to change things but become very indecisive on whether or not it would be a good idea. The hardest part about writing for me is usually the introduction because you have to properly introduce the topic but also keep it short while not specifying your entire writing piece and I usually struggle with this part. Although my major is undecided, If i decide to pursue a career in early childhood education I would be expected to write literacy genres along with descriptive, persuasive and narrative forms of writing. Being an effective writer will affect my career opportunities because having experience with different writing pieces allows me to conversate with younger ages at a more supporting level and understanding.
