The text that I chose for Essay #3 is the Film “Just Mercy” starring Micheal B Jordan. My thesis : Social Injustice in America has held down the Black community for years. In many instances people are punished in the criminal court system for just being a certain color. There should be a better criminal system that protects colored black people from overly aggressive punishments in the court system.

What I hope to achieve in this essay is to analyze the unfair criminal court system that keeps black people overly oppressed today in America. Key points that i want to address in this essay are how the director Destin Daniel Cretton introduces the Main Character from the movie Bryan Stevenson,( a black man fighting for his people in the court system)  to combat the corrupt systematic racism adding to the importance of the movie toward opening the viewers eyes towards the corruption in our court systems in America. The events that inspired to me to do further research is i always wanted to see this movie but never had the moment to watch it since i found out about it, so i found that this essay would be a perfect moment to watch it and write a analytical research paper on it. I came up with my thesis by watching the trailer of the movie and understanding the gist of the movie in order to make a statement that would allow me to go in depth when writing my paper. I plan to explore the statement in my paper by using plenty of scholarly and popular sources to back up my statement as well as the movie, how the main character goes about combating the systematic racism.

In “The Good Immigrant Student” by Bich Minh Nguyen , Nguyen States in paragraph 28,”I would like to make a broad accurate statement about immigrant children in schools. I would like to speak for them (us). I hesitate; I cannot”.  What Nguyen was saying was she wanted to try and tell a overall story for immigrant students, but she couldn’t because not all immigrants are treated equally and not are all in the same situations that she was in. Nguyen when she was a student was very shy and quite, opting to fade away from her teachers and classmates. But on the other hand not too different from her situation was her sister Anh, “Anh disliked school from the start, choosing rebellion rather than silence”. Showing that not to different from her, two different people had two different outlooks on being a immigrant in school. Nguyen would have to go through things like white prejudice teachers like Mrs.Alexander, saying “Your reading too fast” or demanding “What does this word mean ?” while being picked on to read. Nguyen explains that she was the only one of her classmates that would have to do this. Or when she had experiences that consisted of blonde school girls telling the teachers “I cant sit by her. My mom said I cant sit by anyone who’s brown” when sitting next to one of Nguyen Indian friends. Nguyen cant make a broad statement because there is so much that goes into being a immigrant student. Your environment and the people you have around you play a huge roll in this as everybody is due for a different experience. Nguyen States “I know not every kid is fortunate enough to have a teacher like Mrs.King, or a program like spectrum, or even the benefit of a manual written by a group of concerned educators”. Expressing how not every kids experience is the same, therefore leaving her unavailable to make a broad statement for all immigrant children.

Abraham Lincolns infamous “Gettysburg Address” and John F Kennedy’s “Inaugural Address” are both two speeches that are renownedly known across the nation its importance to American history. Both speeches have their differences, but hold similar context within them. Both made in times of crisis; the President’s expressed the value of  everybody being made equally and therefore should be treated equally.  Abraham Lincolns speech addresses and pays tribute to union soldiers who passed away during the battle of Gettysburg, saying “We have came to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live” Paying his tribute to his union soldiers who died in order for this country to be wheres its at now. Beginning his speech with ” Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.” Lincoln starts by paying tribute to the Declaration of Independence of our nation, referencing our values; Equality for all. Furthering his speech by emphasizing towards the end the importance of coming together as a nation to make sure that these soldiers did not die in vain,  but to sacrifice themselves in order for ” Under god, shall have a new birth of freedom- and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not parish from this earth.” In other words making sure our soldiers died for the purpose of having a government that supports the people. Their has been many progress done in terms of government of, by , and for the people, but still lacks things and will be a hassle worth tackling for other generations in the future to create change.

President John F Kennedy’s “Inaugural Address” on the contrary made motive that he as the leader of our nation would take any measures to make sure the nation succeeds and equality is granted. Beginning his speech with a powerful message “the belief that the rights of man come not from the generosity of the state but from the hand of god” Saying that we the people have the power to make the world a better place and that freedom is a gift from god that no one has the right to take away from you. President Kennedy also attacks the problem of poverty within the nation in his speech, stating “to convert our good words into good deeds—in a new alliance for progress—to assist free men and free governments in casting off the chains of poverty.” Telling thee crowd about the problems of the nations poverty that is still a ongoing problem today. Also stating , “If a free society cannot help the many who are poor, it cannot save the few who are rich.” This is still holds value till this day as the many people who poor need government assistance and the few who are rich in our nation dont. Al in all , although different speeches in different time periods, both were made to conquer the same problem.

I do not believe that the United States has yet to solve these problems, Poverty is still a ongoing issue throughout the nation. Racism is also still alive in America, with colored people still fighting against injustices and police brutality. This is a ongoing issue in America, as there has been decades on top of decades of injustices against colored people, and still no change; still no equality among the people.

When one goes to prison, there is a choice that one can make. They could either be compliant and just serve there time without making any changes in there live or they could use the time to better themselves as a person. In “Literacy Behind Bars” by Malcolm X when Malcolm entered prison he was motivated to learn to read and write due to his envy of his sophisticated friend and problems with reading books and truly understanding the outside world. Throughout the course of the text, Malcolm  states that although incarcerated he has  “never had been so truly free in [his] life”. Which gives the reader a irony of a imprisoned man never being so free in his life.

The sense irony that the reader gets when associating a imprisoned man with being free is a direct result of Malcolm’s perception of literature. Malcolm’s perception of Literature correlates with Freedom because before he was imprisoned he wasn’t well taught in these areas and therefore struggled in everyday life, being more imprisoned in his everyday life due to his lack of knowledge that created limitations for him. A prisoner to his own thoughts as many would say, Malcolm states in his auto biography “But every book i picked up had few sentences which didn’t contain anywhere from one to nearly all of the words that might as well have been in Chinese”.  Showing the reader how when he would read certain things his lack of knowledge on literature would hinder his understanding of the text as if it was in a foreign language. Malcolm also stated in his auto biography,”Where else but in a prison could i have attacked my ignorance being by being able to study intensely sometimes as much as fifteen hours a day.” This quote shows the relationship of  Literature and Freedom because with Malcolm having all this time to himself that he wouldn’t usually have in the real world , he would have the time to work on his deficiency that would hold him back which was literature . There fore making the connection of the literature giving him freedom because he would now be able to function in the outside world without any of the complications that he had before.

The Language of English can be interpreted in many different ways by all types of people, what is understood by someone as perfect English for the next person can be simple or watered down. This is portrayed in “Mother Tongue” by Amy Tan , as she illustrates to the audience how from her perspective her moms English was Perfect but to others it was “Broken” or “Water Downed” to the public’s perception.  The role that language played in Amy Tans life helped her mature and deal with things you wouldn’t regularly see a kid handling with due to her moms lack of English. Having to deal with instances such as, “When I was fifteen, she used to have me call people on the phone to pretend I was she. In this guise”.  Amy’s Mom had Amy talking over the phone to her stock broker in New York, Amy would have her mom telling her things like “Why he dont send me check, already two weeks late. So mad he lie to me, losing me money.” Amy would hear her mother say these things and translate over the phone, “Yes, im getting rather concerned. You had agreed to send the check two weeks ago, but it hasn’t arrived”. This shaped Amy’s perception by not understanding the value of what her mother had to say earlier in life saying, “My mother’s ‘Limited’ English limited my perception of her.” Amy thought that because her mother expressed herself imperfectly that her thoughts were imperfect, which wasn’t the case. Amy became aware of her own language biases late in life when she realized,  that when she described the English as broken and limited it was being described as something that needed to be fixed, and the person behind the speech was limited as a person.

I believe people who have English as their second language are constantly aware of the language being used around them due to it being a secondary language. If they were to hear there native language they wouldn’t think to much about it depending on their Environment, but naturally when they hear English their brain will tell the difference and make them aware. I am always aware of the English around me because i am always code switching depending on the environment im in, in order to adapt. If I walk into a professional Environment I would talk use a more correct and socially accepted English, and in contrary if im in my social environment i would use a more broken down English.

Class Introduction – Dalbert Andujar

Posted by Dalbert Andujar on

Hello Everyone , My name is Dalbert Andujar ( Him, He ) My intended major at Lehman college right now is currently undecided although I am leaning towards Business Administration

After reviewing the syllabus, one thing I am exited about is Improving my writing and text understanding at a collegiate level and expanding vocabulary in my writing. Also I am looking forward to challenging myself on writing pieces and exercises in this class. Lastly i noticed on the syllabus that we would be raising social awareness and that’s what i’m most exited about because it is a topic and form of writing that i am passionate about because of the world we live in today. Something that I am nervous about is sometimes sharing my writing with other classmates just because it may not be the best but i’m looking forward to working on that.

Qualities of a good writer are being able to get to the point in a timely manner in a writing and not drag the piece of writing longer than it has to be. In order to become a good writer you have to be willing to learn and take constructive criticism from your peers and professor. It is important to write well because it can be a way of communication either to inform someone about something or to express yourself , writing has many functions in today’s world. The easiest part of writing for me is finding supportive evidence in a text to support my claim in the writing, its the easiest for me because I’m good at making connections between the text and the prompt. The most difficult part for me when writing is being consistent with body paragraphs after the first couple, the level of writing tends to fall off a little from past criticism. That’s what I feel I have to work on along with expanding my versatility in writing. Writing pieces I would have to write in my intended major ( Business Administration ) would be  Memorandums, reports, proposals, emails, and a variety of other business related written materials are all forms of business writing. Being a effective writer in my field of study can be helpful because it can make reports and memorandums more clear and understanding.
