One of the texts I will use for my Analytical Research Paper is ‘’Economic inequality’’ by Esteban Ortiz-Ospina and Max Roser. This article contains a lot of information on how Women are not given the same equality as men, especially when it comes to finances. What I hope to accomplish in my analytical research paper is to inform and educate the audience that is not aware of the social issues that occur in gender inequality. Making it known that not only do females experience gender inequality but so do people in the LGBTQ community. For instance, transgender and gays experience many hardships throughout their lives because of their sexuality and brutal social norms society has on men and women. What inspired me to do this research is having friends and family members that have experienced social inequality and myself in their field of work and many other aspects. In addition, growing up witnessing my transgender cousin go through experiences in a world where many people like her aren’t accepted. This made me realize how hard it can be for people who are considered not following the social construct that’s created by society. I came up with the thesis after reading Esteban Ortiz’s article and noticing the accuracy and importance stated when he spoke about how women are coming a long way experiencing gender inequity especially in the workplace. Lastly, this allowed me to spread awareness when it comes to gender inequality giving me the ability to grasp people’s attention to become educated in gender inequality.

After reading ‘’The Good Immigrant Student ’’ by Bich Minh Nguyen where the author expresses her experiences in being an immigrant student in America she made a statement  In paragraph 28, “I would like to make a broad, accurate statement about immigrant children in schools. I would like to speak for them (us). I hesitate; I cannot.” Which to me she meant she couldn’t speak for all immigrant students living in America because each individual goes through their own experiences. Like Bich herself, she was a very shy girl who had low self-esteem in school because of her acknowledgment she knew she differed from the rest in her class she made a statement on how she was,  “I was nearly silent, deadly shy, and wholly obedient. My greatest fear was being called on, or in any way standing out more than I already did in the class that was, except for me and one black student, dough-white. I got good grades because I feared the authority of the teacher; I felt that getting in good with Mrs. Alexander would protect me, that she would protect me from the frightful rest of the world. “Which was a very different experience than people like her sister or the two Indian girls that were her friends. She explained how her sister handled being considered as someone who’s different from the rest. “My sister, for instance, was never as shy as I was. Anh disliked school from the start, choosing rebellion rather than silence.” And using the friend’s experiences,  “Indian friend of mine who told of an elementary school experience in which a blond schoolchild told her teacher, “I can’t sit by her. My mom said I can’t sit by anyone who’s brown.’’ And another friend, whose family immigrated around the same time mine did, whose second-grade teacher used her as a vocabulary example: “Children, this is what a foreigner is.’’ And her speaking for every immigrant student just based on her experiences or people around her might leave other immigrant students who can’t relate left out because their immigrant students who can have the potential to actually have a better experience than what she has stated she could even contradict herself.

After reading ‘’The Gettysburg Address’’ by Abraham Lincoln and ‘’Inaugural Address’’ By John F. Kennedy. I recognized that both former President Abraham Lincoln and John F Kennedy shared major effects in history. President Abraham Lincoln was the sixteen president the one who led the Union to victory in the American Civil war. While John F. Kennedy was best known for concerning relations with the Soviet Union and Cuba and taking the  U.S. economy out of recession through his reforms. However, both formal presidents held a major beneficial impact in American history for various different reasons, both also shared similar ideas. Both formal presidents believed in having equality within the people. In “The Gettysburg Address” president Abraham Lincoln emphasizes the importance of everyone gathering up together to show respect for those who fought on the battlefield. He states how “It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us—that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion—that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain” meaning it was the right thing to do to come together to show respect for those who lost their lives and so it won’t go unnoticed upon the living. John F. Kennedy as well believed equality within the people because ‘’he supported policies promoting racial equality, aid to the poor and to education, and increased availability of medical care;” as well emphasizing in his speech that “Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe to assure the survival and the success of liberty.” meaning he will do anything so everyone can free within society from oppressive restrictions. 

After pointing out Lincoln and John F. Kennedy’s similar ideas for equality, the United States has yet to solve these problems. We continue to fight against racial injustice and many more issues that divided us and take away our freedom and liberty. We are part of a movement called Black Lives Matter because of racial injustices within the political system.

The role language played in Amy Tan’s life is fascinating to her. It makes her feel in control when she is speaking or writing it also gives her the ability to connect with others through the choice of words she uses. She stated how ‘’ I spend a great deal of my time thinking about the power of language- the way it can evoke an emotion, a visual image, a complex idea, or a simple truth,’’ meaning it’s something she thinks threw carefully. Language shaped her own perception of herself because it’s something she never gave up on its something she dedicated time to, to break the social norm that Asian Americans were more likely to be good in math and science rather than English. Making her feel as if she’s good enough like any well-educated American to master the ability to co switch perfectly and educating. She became aware of her own language biases when experiencing an event where her mother was present to witness her. She explained how ‘’ the talk was going along well enough until I  remembered one major difference that made the whole talk sound wrong. My mother was in the room. And it was perhaps the first time she had heard me give a lengthy speech using the kind of English I have never used with her’’ making her realize that the way she communicates with her mother is different from the way she communicates with others because if she uses the same English she uses with her mother with others they would instantly detect it as broken or unprofessional English and many wouldn’t be able to understand her the way her mother will. I do think that people who learn English as a second language are constantly aware of the language used around them from experiences I’m constantly aware that the way I speak to my parent is way different from the way I talk in school and if I write and speak the way I talk to my parents in school teachers would then consider me as below grade level or an unprofessional student.

What the narrative suggests about the relationship between literature and freedom is that even though Malcolm X was in prison, a place that challenges people on an emotional and mental level. As well as making them feel weak-minded and powerless within themself, it gave Malcolm X the opportunity to experience something within himself out of his ordinary which was the power of knowledge. The power to learn more about what the world of white privileged people might have hidden from him as an African American and giving him the right and knowledge to defend himself. In addition, Malcolm felt that he had Freedom when it came to literature due to the fact that it was a skill he taught himself, in Malcolm’s perspective the word Freedom meant something that you do for yourself. With that being said this was something he learned without needing the help nor begging a White Man to teach him. Furthermore, Literature was a way for him to express his feelings and opinions towards what was going on in the world, without him being judged about how he felt.

Class Introduction

Hello, my name is Yesmely Medina (she/her),  I’m undecided in what I Intend to major in.

 

A few things that I am excited about in this course are learning new techniques and strategies that can help me improve my writing skills and will help me achieve a new style of writing. Allowing this course to help me express myself clearly in a formal and professional way. What I fear about this course is that it will make me feel overwhelmed because I am used to a distinct style of learning, being that it is an online course the programming is more complex than what I am used to. I am afraid that this style of learning will not allow me to grow as a writer because I require a lot of demonstration. I’m nervous that I’ll feel helpless with assignments and won’t be able to comprehend what I’m learning. I’m worried that I won’t be able to write coherently in this new style of learning since I’m more used to a visual style of learning. 

Some qualities of an excellent writer are someone who expresses themselves on any topic in a very detailed and fluent way. An outstanding writer makes any reader intrigued by using words that can catch any reader’s attention by their choice of words. A talented writer is specific and explains what is trying to be said. It is significant to write well because it allows a person to express themselves and it is an attribute that is used in the actual world. It is important to know when to code-switch and write professionally that will help a person gain more knowledge on being a wonderful writer and being effective in my career path. 

The easiest part of writing for me is that I am very detailed in my writing. When I’m writing about a topic interesting to me, I can write freely about the topic and express myself very well. The hardest part about writing is that I have trouble expressing myself in topics I’m not interested in, which mainly leads me to lack understanding of how I can write effectively. 

I am currently undecided on what I want to major in but being an effective writer can affect my career opportunities because writing is not only being able to express yourself on paper or document, it also affects an individual’s form of speech and how they’re able to present themselves as a person. For instance, if I were to attend a job interview with an unprofessional resume and form of speech I would present myself ineffectively. This can lead to many career opportunities being taken away from an individual because of the way they present themselves in writing and speech.
